My middle school CT’s teaching style is strict and to-the-point, but also very nurturing. As much as she tries to be firm with them, her motherly instincts do come out and she is compassionate with her students. From the few times that I have seen her so far, students find her approachable and are comfortable asking her questions during class. The classroom environment is very open and the students aren’t afraid to be themselves or joke with her. Though my CT may nurture the students a bit at times, they still respect her and that is easily seen in the way she can give a look and students know it’s time to learn. Her style does not change in her four classes and she stays pretty consistent with all the students.
My high school CT is more lax with his students in the sense that he doesn’t mind if they talk a little, but he is strict when it comes time to doing work and taking notes. There is a lot of respect in the classroom, and my CT treats the students as adults and helps them as much as he can, but puts more responsibility on them since they are older. Students are comfortable around him, and I think it comes with the fact that he always lets the students know what to expect that day in class, writing the agenda on the board everyday. He is stricter with his 10th graders, but loosens up with his elective classes because he knows those students actually want to learn about the topic, rather than being required to take the class.
After seeing two similar yet different teaching styles, I would want to be a strict, yet lax teacher. I want to be able to make students feel like they need to always be on their toes in my class, but also comfortable where they can ask me questions and not feel scared to do so. I want students to be able to joke around, yet know when it’s time to work and learn. I want students to see me as an approachable teacher, someone who they can learn with but also have fun with, and see me as a teacher, and not just a young person they can take advantage of.
